Charles
Floyd, a twenty-two year old, Kentucky-born sergeant in the Corps of
Discovery, became the first U.S. soldier to die west of the Mississippi
and was the only loss of life (August 20, 1804) during the Lewis &
Clark Expedition's rugged and dangerous two and a half year journey
(two years, 4 months). This medallion is to honor his memory and his
sacrifice, and to honor the entire Corp of Discovery who risked their
own lives to carry out the exploration of this new and unknown territory.
