The
Journey Begins Medallion
Upstream
from St. Louis, on the east side of the river, where the Mississippi
and Missouri Rivers meet, the Wood River empties into the Mississippi
from the east, near present day Hartford, Illinois. Here in late 1803,
along the Wood River, Lewis & Clark set up camp for the winter.
Because the Corps of Discovery was a military expedition, this camp
became a training ground for the grueling months ahead. Lewis &
Clark drilled the men, built huts, collected supplies and trade goods,
prepared boats, studied maps, and gleaned information from fur traders
in preparation for the journey ahead.
The journey began late in the day on May 14, 1804, with the firing of
a cannon, as the corps of Discovery set out from Camp Dubois, crossed
the Mississippi River and proceeded up the Missouri.
