Corps of Discovery Commissioning

On January 18, 1803, Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States, requested from Congress the modest amount of $2500.00 to explore the expansive region beyond the Mississippi. For several years prior to this request, Jefferson had been concerned about this area and the need to know more about it from commercial, geographical and national points of view.

Although this region did not belong to the United States at the time he requested the funds,
circumstances that would allow its purchase, doubling the geographical area of the United States, were already in place. On the following April 30th a treaty would be signed with Napoleon Bonaparte by Jefferson's U.S. representatives in France that would make possible the purchase of the entire Louisiana Territory.

Jefferson appointed his private secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead the Corps of Discovery expedition. Lewis recommended William Clark, a close friend and lieutenant in the army to jointly lead the expedition with him.
